A recent report from the National Bureau of Statistics  “); background-size: 1px 1px; background-position: 0px calc(1em + 1px); background-repeat: repeat no-repeat”>showed that Akwa Ibom state has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 37.7% as of Q3, 2018.

In fact, youth unemployment in Nigeria, especially in the South-South region which are the oil producing areas of the Niger Delta, is alarmingly high.

That’s why  “); background-size: 1px 1px; background-position: 0px calc(1em + 1px); background-repeat: repeat no-repeat”>RootHub, a technology incubator and co-working space based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state is betting on its tech-based programme to reduce youth unemployment within the South-South region of Nigeria.

The training programme called  “); background-size: 1px 1px; background-position: 0px calc(1em + 1px); background-repeat: repeat no-repeat”>Tech 101, which aims to equip disadvantaged youths in rural areas of Nigeria with digital skills, claims to have trained over 11,300 individuals, mostly students and entrepreneurs, including job seekers, corp members, the employed, artisans and public servants, according to data from its tracker as at May 2019.

Participants get to learn graphics design, digital marketing, design thinking, team building, social media marketing and more.

But Tech 101 goes beyond training.

The programme “provides much needed technology skills to low-income youths, empowering them in today’s digital world and helping them access employment, advance career paths, and drive self-reliance through entrepreneurship.”

The Uyo-based technology hub says it has received support from Google, AKEES, AYAYA Foundation, Onuk Ink, etc for its monthly editions in Uyo and other cities, including Abak, Bakassi, Benin, Calabar, Eket, Etinan, Mkpat Enin, and the University of Uyo.

RootHub’s goal is to equip thousands of people in remote and disadvantaged rural areas with the skills to apply technology to shape lives.

It is hoped that its tech-focused projects and initiatives geared towards youth empowerment would contribute towards reducing the unemployment rate within the state and the region.
